With the 2025 Texas Tech football season coming to end in such frustrating fashion, the Red Raiders needed to make some offseason moves that would help get them back to the College Football Playoff and also build upon the success that Texas Tech established with its 12-2 run in 2025.

It looks like Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders were able to take a significant step forward towards doing just that on Sunday evening. With seemingly everyone in the country interested in where 5-star transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby would end up after leaving the Cincinnati Bearcats, Texas Tech was able to get his commitment.

If that feels like a big deal for Texas Tech, it is. The Red Raiders, in their College Football Playoff quarterfinals matchup were held scoreless and suffered a 23-0 shutout loss against the Oregon Ducks in the Orange Bowl.

And to help bounce back from that, McGuire and the Texas Tech football team just picked up a dual threat quarterback who helped elevate the Bearcats this past season, getting Cincinnati back to being in a bowl game this year. Now, the talented dual threat QB will be playing in Lubbock and surrounded by a significant amount of talent.

After landing 5-star QB Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech’s transfer portal class sits at No. 4 in the country

With Sorsby committed, the Red Raiders boast one of the best transfer portal classes in the country. Here’s what the top 10 transfer portal classes look like in terms of rankings (and the number of commits they have) in the wake of Sorsby committing to Texas Tech, according to 247 Sports:

  • Penn State Nittany Lions - 15 commits
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 12 commits
  • Indiana Hoosiers - 7 commits
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 5 commits
  • Wisconsin Badgers - 10 commits
  • Ole Miss Rebels - 4 commits
  • Colorado Buffaloes - 8 commits
  • Texas A&M Aggies - 6 commits
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 8 commits
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 4 commits

I mean, it’s fair to say that the Red Raiders are in a pretty solid spot. Texas Tech has done plenty to demonstrate that it’s able to thrive in the transfer portal after last season’s success and now it looks like the Red Raiders are ready to continue that sort of momentum as a program. It’ll be fascinating to see what Texas Tech is capable of this coming season.
