Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech Red Raiders don’t have any margin for mistakes right now. No room for errors. But it’s worth remembering that the opponent that the Texas Tech softball team has lined up for today is in the exact sort of situation that the Red Raiders are in.
Both Texas Tech and UCLA are on the brink of elimination. Either one of these teams could be heading home this evening as the Red Raiders and the Bruins get set to face one another in an elimination game on Day 4 of the 2026 Women’s College World Series.
Tonight’s game is all about staying alive in Oklahoma City and having more chances to keep advancing on in the Women’s College World Series. The winner tonight gets the lovely prize of playing the Alabama Crimson Tide in the WCWS semifinals (and they’ll have to beat Bama twice without losing once, so no pressure there or anything).
Tonight’s loser? Their season is over. It’s done. The end of the road. They’ll be going back to either West Texas or the West Coast.
Texas Tech softball vs UCLA is a win-or-go-home matchup in the Women’s College World Series
It’s interesting how these two teams ended up in this specific moment.
The Red Raiders were able to open the Women’s College World Series up with an 8-0 run-rule win over Semanatha Ricketts and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Then, unfortunately, all of Texas Tech’s momentum was halted as the Red Raiders ended up losing to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in extra innings.
UCLA had the other sort of direction to this one. They lost to the Crimson Tide on Day 1, but bounced back and managed to run-rule the Arkansas Razorbacks, winning 11-0 and eliminating them in the process. So it’s fair to guess that the Bruins might have a bit more momentum at this specific moment.
Especially if you take a look at how Texas Tech’s bats were completely and totally silenced in their 2-1 loss to Tennessee. It’ll be interesting to see how Texas Tech tries to keep up with the Bruins and if the Red Raiders will be able to go score for score with UCLA or if Kaitlyn Terry and NiJaree Canady can quiet the Bruins at the plate.
Texas Tech and UCLA will meet up in Oklahoma City at 6 p.m. CT. The winner stays alive. The loser heads home. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
