The head coach of the Texas Tech softball team sure seems to be feeling a fair bit of joy after the Red Raiders’ stunning win over the UCLA Bruins. Sunday evening, after Texas Tech managed to take UCLA down in extra innings, Gerry Glasco had the opportunity to look at the win and reflect on the moment. Which is a pretty big moment.
Texas Tech is headed back to the Women’s College World Series Semifinals for just the second time in program history. It’s not common for the Texas Tech softball team to be in this sort of position. Folks, it’s important to remember that the Red Raiders just need two more wins and they’ll be competing for a national title.
But Glasco wasn’t looking ahead after Texas Tech’s 8-7 win in nine innings over the Bruins. Instead, he was recalling some great moments from early on in his coaching career and seeing how they matched up with the moment that he’s in now.
Gerry Glasco recalls a junior high coaching tradition after Texas Tech softball takes down the UCLA Bruins in the WCWS
“When I coached junior high ball, I would always have my team, when something happened on the field, happy, exciting, my shortstop made a great play, one of the other players would automatically yell ‘softball!’ as loud as they could,” Glasco explained. “Everybody would count to three and then everybody said ‘I love this game.’”
There’s a lot to love about where Glasco and the Red Raiders are right now. Texas Tech’s hard work is really paying off in some significant ways. And against the Bruins, there were a lot of great moments to enjoy.
There’s also just the fact that the Red Raiders are here right now.
"That's all I could think when the game ended. Softball! I love this game,” Glasco continued. “What a great, you know, just a great sport this is.”
Texas Tech surviving against the Bruins is something that I think was exhausting for everyone at home, but it really seems like Texas Tech finding a way to go out and get a win like that was something that was thrilling for the Red Raiders themselves. Their head coach doesn’t seem to be taking any of this for granted and that’s cool to see.
“The environment here in Oklahoma City, unbelievable,” Glasco said.
Texas Tech will be around in OKC for at least a little while longer. The Red Raiders aren’t done yet. They’ve got at least one more game, this time against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
If Tech wins, then the Red Raiders will get another matchup with Alabama. And a win there sends Texas Tech to the finals. There’s no room for stumbling though. A loss and this whole season comes to an end for Glasco and the Red Raiders.
