With a Game 1 win on Friday afternoon in the Gainesville Super Regional, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are just one win away from making it right back to Oklahoma City and the Women’s College World Series. In case you missed it, Texas Tech managed to beat the Florida Gators 10-8 on Friday and now have a very real shot at clinching the Super Regional today in a Game 2 matchup that will take place at 11:30 CT on ABC.
But while the Gators are on the verge of being eliminated, it’s not like Game 1 was something that just went smoothly and easily for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech trailed 1-0 through the first three innings, jumped ahead in the fourth inning, and then had to battle through the final few frames of the game to actually win.
It took a two-run home run from Mia Williams in the seventh inning to break an 8-8 tie with the Gators. Now, can Texas Tech build upon that Game 1 success and eliminate Florida in their own stadium today?
Will the Texas Tech Red Raiders eliminate the Florida Gators in Game 2 of the Gainesville Super Regional?
It’ll be interesting to see how the Gators go about approaching things in the circle today. Their pitching depth isn’t as robust as Texas Tech’s and the Red Raiders proved they can cause problems for Keagan Rothrock. Now, I should say that Rothrock is good and managed to go through 4.0 innings pitched, but she gave up five hits, three runs (all unearned, for what that’s worth), and issued out a couple of walks.
Along with that, Rothrock only struck out a single Texas Tech batter.
But while the Gators ended up pulling Rothrock after 74 pitches thrown, it’s not like Florida’s bullpen fared all that much better than she did. Olivia Miller only went 0.2 innings and gave up four hits and four runs (all of which were earned) to Texas Tech. Katelynn Oxley (who was eventually credited with the loss) gave up three hits and three runs (all of which were earned) to the Red Raiders.
Leah Stevens did get through a clean inning, facing three batters and giving up zero hits, runs, and walks, but that’s not exactly going to be a game changing sort of statline when you compare it to everything else from Game 1.
So, how will the Gators approach things in the circle in Game 2? Can the Red Raiders get after things again today and put pressure on the Gators once again?
