Nobody in the Big 12 has more hits than Tim Tadlock’s Texas Tech Red Raiders. I mean, the Red Raiders are piling up hits at an insane rate. Unfortunately for Texas Tech baseball fans (and the team and the coaches), that doesn’t seem to matter. The Red Raiders have managed to rack up 488 hits and they still have a ton of losses.
This season has been absolutely maddening for the Red Raiders in so many different ways.
Through 39 games for the Texas Tech baseball team, the Red Raiders have those aforementioned 488 hits, which is 24 more than the second place Arizona State Sun Devils (464) and 54 more than the third place Cincinnati Bearcats (434).
And yet, Texas Tech is currently sitting at 6-12 when it comes to Big 12 games this season. THAT’S NOT GOOD AT ALL. IT IS VERY ALARMING.
Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in hits and still can’t find a way to win games
Here’s what the full Big 12 looks like right now when stacking everyone up according to how many hits they have so far this season:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 488 hits
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 464 hits
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 434 hits
- Kansas State Wildcats - 430 hits
- Kansas Jayhawks - 395 hits
- West Virginia Mountaineers - 387 hits
- Utah Utes - 380 hits
- BYU Cougars - 378 hits
- Oklahoma State Cowboys - 360 hits
- Arizona Wildcats - 345 hits
- Baylor Bears - 343 hits
- TCU Horned Frogs - 339 hits
- UCF Knights - 339 hits
- Houston Cougars - 326 hits
And again, this is bad. I mean, it’s great that the Red Raiders are at the top of the conference here, but Texas Tech is sitting at No. 12 (in a tie) in the Big 12 standings at the moment. Despite being better (by a wide margin) than everyone else in the Big 12 when it comes to getting contact at the plate.
What’s fascinating about that is that the Red Raiders have six players with more than 50 hits so far this season. This lineup is uniquely great at getting hits. There’s a ton of contact. Unfortunately, there’s just not enough runs being scored to offset what’s happening on the mound.
